MAKE AMERICA SANE AGAIN

Let us project out two or three years from now, when various Democrats consider seeking their party's nomination for the presidency, or when the party has actually selected its nominee and the final campaign begins. Those who did not vote for Donald J. Trump in 2016 and, I suspect, some who did vote for him, will be attracted to the campaign slogan, "Make America Sane Again!" Let me caution you, regardless of how very much appropriate such a slogan will seem, it must be avoid. Why? It is to be avoided because just as the deepest dye-in-the-wool racists do not want to be called "racist," just as the dumbest-of-the-dumb do not want to be called "dumb," or "stupid," or "ignorant," truly insane people do not much like being called "insane" or "crazy." Democrats will not win votes, will not persuade their opponents, will not build coalitions, will not expand the tent, etc., by calling the some seemingly insane voters "insane." So, let us agree today, "Make America Sane Again" cannot be the adopt slogan in 2020 even though sanity will be very much needed after four years of a Donald J. Trump presidency.
